Tunisia blue guide-Hachette tourisme- 2006 new edition
The new Tunisia blue guide has just been published and has two and a half pages on Djerba Explore Park.
The sites are now graded and the Lalla Hadria Museum received three stars (the maximum), and is the only site on the island to have this grade.

This immense tourist complex (120 000m2) proposes cultural activities and a diversified animation &. Djerba Explore is a cultural place thanks to one of the first Arabic-Muslim collection in the country. After this very instructive visit, you can walk in the two others sites: a nice garden where are carefully reconstituted the living conditions and traditional activities of the islanders, and the crocodile farm. It is the place to be when you go to Djerba.

For seeing
Djerba Explore: tourist road. On the way to Aghir, just after the Taguermess lighthouse.75-745-277, open everyday from 9AM to 8PM (5.30PM during the winter). 6DT (4,2 ¬) for Animalia, 5DT (3,5 ¬) for the museum and 4DT (2,8 ¬) for the Djerba Heritage, or 13,5DT (9,5 ¬) for the full ticket.
It is a well thought tourist complex, mixing cultural sections and animations like a theme park. If you wish to visit it all, you should start form the museum when your attention is at its maximum. It deserves it.
• Its 14 galleries gather almost 3000 items and offer a rich panorama of the Tunisian and middle-eastern arts. At first the collection explains the most important themes of the Islamic arts, such as calligraphy, and then the artistic influences of the Persians, Ottomans, Berbers, Touaregs or Maghrebians worlds. The last section is dedicated to Tunisia, from the architecture to the ceramic and the traditional costumes. The originality of the exposition is the fact that it is not interested in the meaning of the objects but essentially in the artistic values. It is hard to enunciate everything but during the visit we liked the vase neck from the 10th or 11th century, decorated with faces, survival of the pre-Islamic arts, this balance plate from the 13th century, delicately carved, where the inscriptions invite the jeweller to stay honest, or this wedding contract, from 1710 evocating the monogamy( already!). Please notice that the museography is sober and airy.
• More entertaining, the Djerba Heritage site presents a good reconstitution of the habitat and the local craftsman's trade. The walk leads the visitors through a lot of fresh rooms of a traditional house. Nothing is missing, from the wedding room to the guest house, with some old pictures. The next house is more coquettish, with an Ottoman influence. If the oil mill reveals the proceeding to create the olive oil, the best parts are the pottery and weaving workshops. In here, workers will show you these jobs. And do not forget to show your children the old irrigation system: a dromedary carrying bags full of water!
• After the cultural effort, some comfort: Animalia is defined as the biggest crocodile farm in the Mediterranean basin. You will see big ponds overhung by bridges, where 400 crocodiles enjoy life. It is better to come when they are eating (theoretically on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 4PM), t is more exciting! Otherwise you may find it a little bit boring to watch the crocodiles sleep all day long.

This complex, opened in 2003, offers an exceptional Islamic arts museum, an ecomuseum where you will discover the Djerbian living conditions and craft and a huge pond where 400 Nil crocodiles enjoy life. You can watch the feeding of the big animals (4PM on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays), visit a well furnished menzel with its houch, its olive oil mill and weaving workshop, and broaden your mind at the impressive Lalla Hadria Museum. A highly advised stop. The exposed objects where taken from all over the Islam and they show the influence of the Islamic art in the Mediterranean basin and Asia.
