Djerba heritage : the weaving workshop

The reputation of the wool woven in Djerba has exceeded the country's borders since the Middle Ages. The workshops were numerous on the island. The merchants were coming from Europe and Middle East to buy woollens. The weaving workshop or haouenet, easily recognisable with its triangular pediment, is composed by a large room with a vaulted ceiling where the weaver untiringly manages the ballet of the wool threads. The threads are assembled, the designs take shape and the colours join in under the artisan's nimble fingers.
